Sam Altman, the founder of ChatGPT, is reportedly launching a new cryptocurrency called Worldcoin, backed by $100 million in VC funding.

Worldcoin according to their website is attempting to build the worlds largest ‘identity and financial network’:

Worldcoin is building the world’s largest identity and financial network as a public utility, giving ownership to everyone.We aim to create universal access to the global economy regardless of country or background, accelerating the transition to an economic future that welcomes and benefits every person on the planet.

While Altman has big plans for Worldcoin, including making it the first-ever cryptocurrency to be held by every person on the planet, there are several red flags that raise concerns.

One of the most concerning aspects is the fact that to sign up for a Worldcoin ID and receive a free Worldcoin token, users will need to submit a scan of their eyeballs using a proprietary iris-scanning tool known as the Orb. While Altman claims this is necessary to verify that users are real humans, this requirement is invasive and raises questions about privacy.

Additionally, Worldcoin’s plans for global expansion seem impractical, with Altman aiming to get to 1 billion users in just two years, despite the current global population being 8 billion people. While Worldcoin is an interesting project and Altman has a proven track record with ChatGPT, investors should approach this new cryptocurrency with a healthy dose of skepticism and carefully consider the potential risks before investing… like the fact that you need to have your eyeballs scanned to invest!

Call me a skeptic, but to me, this cryptocurrency seems more like another arm of the ChatGPT phenomenon. Scaling as quickly as possible, scavenging as much data as possible, about as many people on the planet as possible.
